Dr. Kevin Godfrey Named
Executive Director for the
Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities

Dr. Kevin Godfrey, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and theology professor at Alvernia University, Reading, PA has been named Executive Director of the AFCU effective July 1.

Dr. Godfrey succeeds Sr. Gabrielle Kowalski, Ph.D., the AFCU's first director. With Dr. Godfrey's appointment, the national office will move from Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee, WI to Alvernia University, Reading, PA.

Dr. Godfrey brings deep academic and administrative credentials to the role as well as expertise in Franciscan studies. He joined Alvernia's faculty as an associate professor in theology in 1996 and was appointed dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2007. He is a prolific writer and has published numerous articles and papers on theology. He is also an advisory board member and regular contributor for the AFCU Journal, A Franciscan Perspective in Higher Education. He holds a Ph.D. in historical theology from Saint Louis University, a master's degree in theology from the Catholic University of America, and a bachelor's degree in philosophy and French studies for the University of Minnesota.

Four Neumann University, Aston, Pa students spent part of their winter break in Assisi. They were chosen to represent Neumann on the annual Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities pilgrimage.

The March 19 issue of he National Catholic Reporter features an article about the Association of Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities. The organization is based at Siena College, Loudonville, NY. Maryellen Gilroy, is chair of the association and vice president of student affairs at Siena College.

The Saint Clare Center for Ministry Formation at Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee, WI has changed its name and added new programs and services to provide education and formation for lay Catholics who seek to grow in faith and lead in ministry. It is now called the Saint Clare Center for Catholic Life. The Center enrolls more than 100 graduate students and 80 certificate students as well as serving 1,000 constituents through seminars, lectures and discussions.

Hilbert College, Hamburg, NY president, Cynthia Zane and St. Bonaventure University, St. Bonaventure, NY president Sr. Margaret Carney conducted a session at the annual meeting of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities in Washington, D.C. on January 31. The title was "Recent Developments in Campus-Sponsor Relations." 


Alvernia University, Reading PA president Thomas Flynn was a speaker at the annual meeting of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities in Washington, DC. Dr. Flynn's presentation was "Serving Hispanic Students."


    Quincy University, Quincy, IL celebrated the inauguration of Robert A. Gervasi,         Ph.D. as the twenty-second president, Friday, April 3rd, 2009. Public inaugural events     included a Symposium on Franciscan Spirituality in the Educational Setting from 9:30     a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the inauguration ceremony at 2:00 p.m. followed by a reception     and a 5:00 Mass.

Viterbo University, La Crosse, WI
hosted a Peace Conference on August 1, 2009 to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration which sponsor Viterbo University, and the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi which sponsor Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee,WI.

Marian University, Indianapolis, IN, student Kali Genos was named a Semler Seaton Scholar at the NCEA's 19th annual Seton Awards dinner and ceremony.


Sr. Kay Klackner, Ed.D., director of teacher education in the Department of Education at Silver Lake College, Manitowoc, WI, published an article entitled "Catholic Social Principles: Stewardship" in the April issue of Today's Catholic Teacher. The article is part of an Educator Development Series.

DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF SCIENCE

Siena College invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Science.  The position reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and is responsible for providing vision and leadership for the School of Science while working collaboratively with faculty, administrators, and staff.  The Dean will work closely with the VPAA and the President’s Cabinet to further the mission and vision of Siena College.  For more detailed information about Siena and the School of Science, please visit www.siena.edu.

The School of Science enrolls approximately 650 undergraduate students in the departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Studies, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy.  Interdisciplinary programs and certificates are offered in collaboration with the Schools of Business and Liberal Arts.  The School of Science is experiencing a significant increase in grant-funded activity with a focus on undergraduate research, and maintains an ongoing commitment to teaching.  The Dean ensures the academic integrity of all programs; encourages excellence in teaching; fosters research and grant-seeking; stewards the fiscal well-being of the School of Science; and works with both the Admissions Office and the Development Office to represent the School to prospective families, to potential donors, and to officials of government, business, and the non-profit sector.

The successful candidate will be expected to have: a terminal degree in an appropriate discipline; a record of teaching, scholarship, and service appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor; significant administrative experience; successful undergraduate teaching experience; success in sponsored research and external funding; strong skills in collaborative leadership and communication; a commitment to undergraduate science education within a liberal arts environment.
